Summer in Photos: June

This summer I allotted time for myself to be more creative, spend more time creating content, and exploring the city while working and taking some classes. June was certainly still packed with school work for me, but as the month is dwindling down I'm finding a lot more time for my blog.
I've wanted to create posts like this for a while, but of course, time gets away from me and I barely have time to look at the world through a creative/inspirational lens. I want these posts to be some of my favorite snapshots from the month - fashion and just plain 'artsy' photos. Most I take on my Snapchat/Instagram, but there are always a few I take on my camera that never make the cut. I am by no means claiming to be a photographer, just some pics filling up my camera roll.

Drafting a soon to be blog post in my journal.

Outtake from one of my fashion posts this month.

Particularly obsessed with my little window sill this summer due to all my plants (and I can't deny my love for a good sunset).

I was in love with my Belmont look. Dress was vintage, or I'd link it!

All my paychecks go towards happy hour. This was Seamore's on 18th.

Mike was convincing me that he's a good photographer (and I didn't want to admit he was right).

New places I love:

230 5th Rooftop - To get your NYC rooftop bar fix, crowded even during the week but still fun.
Variety Coffee Roasters in Chelsea - Almond milk isn't extra, everything is marble, and great for doing homework (if you can find a seat!)
Fonda - Was not a margarita lover until I went here.
Seamore's - Best sweet potato fries I've had in NYC.

4th Of July Looks

I love creating looks for the 4th and subtly adding pops of blue and red in each outfit. Today I opted for 3 looks you could wear, depending on what you're doing.

Friday Faves 6.23

It has been a MINUTE since I've done a Friday Faves, so I assume you think there's a lot to talk about, but not really the case. I'm trying some new products this week and want to test them out a bit more before I claim to love them, so look out for those next week :-)

I got a Sephora gift card for my birthday and wanted to use it to try a bunch of new goodies, so basically I just got a few of the little kits you can find in the checkout line. This set caught my eye because of the rose hair + body oil (which is relatively new) and I've been using argan oil in my hair recently so I wanted to try it. I'm not disappointed in it at all, but my bottle keeps leaking! Other than that, I love rose scented anything and this is really subtle and fresh. I use one pump, rub it in my hands then through the ends of my hair, and whatever is left I'll rub into my hands and elbows.
As for the finishing creme, it's amazing for after straightening my hair. It tames my fly aways and really keeps it looking smooth. Now the dry shampoo foam was my most highly anticipated item in the set, simply because how on Earth could that be a thing? I was expecting my hair to be crunchy after using it, but I looked like I just got a blow out instead. I'm someone who likes to use dry shampoo at night in order to get my hair texturized and create volume by morning, but with this it's better to use right before you head out the door.

If you watched my Friday Faves video back in April, I spoke about the Super Pure serum from Glossier. I liked it, but wanted to try another one when it ran out. I decided on the Super Glow because I have lots of scarring and wanted to brighten my skin. I am SO much more impressed with this serum - I noticed radiance in my skin the day after first using it (I only use it at night!). I only need one drop and it covers my whole face, but I mainly focus on my problem spots. I've also been doing a different method of applying it - I put the drop in my hand, rub it to warm it up, then press it into my skin, not rub! I find it absorbs better and I also learned that's the correct way to apply it, who knew?

Not much to say about this since you can't smell it, but just wanted to mention this candle I got as a birthday gift from Jess. This was the first I heard of Paddywax candles, and I'm so impressed by how potent it is! Also how cute is the jar, definitely reusing it once it's completely burned.

Madewell jeans!!! I cannot believe how oblivious I was to their denim. It's no surprise I was a J.Crew junkie for a while (literally all my denim is from Crew if it's not Levi's). I'm not sure if I mentioned it anywhere on social media, but I am working at Madewell this summer while I'm in the city :-) So of course, I had to get a few pairs of their denim, which they are known for. You've seen the Perfect Summer Jeans here and here, but I just got a new pair of black skinnies as well. What I love about their denim is they are SO flattering and also really comfortable. The black skinny jeans are also created not to fade as quickly as other black jeans, so I figured they were a great addition to my closet.

Usually I don't like mentioning products that are unavailable, but how great is this old J.Crew canvas tote? These were some of the first items I got from J.Crew (back in ninth grade!) and I just found this one while I was moving into my summer room. I love how simplistic it is, but also the pop of color in the stitching. Here is the closest tote I could find that I know will be the same quality.

Lady in Vintage Red

I found this silky red top at my local thrift shop a few months ago and never knew how I should style it. I've never been much of a crop top gal, but lately I've been warming up to the idea. I simply just tied the bottoms of my shirt in a knot, and found my favorite high waisted jeans from Madewell. To make it extra casual I just wore my Vans, but if I wanted to wear this for a night out I'd definitely throw on some kitten heels. Also peep the tote bag - one of the first J.Crew items I ever bought back in ninth grade!

Sneaker Collection

If I was asked 'heels or flats?' I'd end up saying sneakers. Certainly, heels are great for certain occasions (I'd still probably opt for a cute kitten heel), but day-to-day I love throwing on some sneakers. Grocery shopping? Sneaks. Going to work? Sneakers. Meeting friends for brunch? Yep.
Okay so clearly I made my point, but today I wanted to share my go-to kicks and why I love them.

These got huge on Instagram (now I'm eyeing the red ones!) where I first saw them and decided they were a must. The next reason I got them was because I can wear them to work, which is a huge deal.
Personally, I had to endure breaking these in. I got many blisters, but suffered through and now these are the comfiest things. I love these because you can just slip them on (obviously) and they complete the simplest looks. I often wear these with a plain tank, jeans/shorts, and I'm good to go.

I have wanted these since Summer 2016. I honestly kept putting off buying them, and just never ended up getting them. I of course forgot about them come winter, then saw them again on the Superga instagram back in May and re-fell-in-love.
These were hard to adjust to just in terms of the larger heel (and being 5'4, I really tell a difference in the height). I wore these to Belmont and my feet did end up hurting (we were there all day so I expected it) but usually these don't hurt. They also don't need to be broken in!
See how I styled them here.

These bad boys have been with me through everything. These are the sneakers that started my love for them. Ever since I read that Leandra Medine did a collab with Superga, I had to have a pair. Michael got these for my 20th birthday, and even he started to say I wear them too much. I love how European these make me feel and they get comfier the more you wear them. They look great with any kind of jean - skinny, bootleg, etc. and even look great in skirts. I sized a half size down.

I went through a 'skater'/'emo'/'only wear black' phase in the Winter. I chopped my hair, got bangs, and dyed my hair. I bought only graphic tees and jeans. I was going through a bit of a tomboy phase (I still am if we're being honest) and these sneaks completed the look during that time. I love these with a more boyfriend fit or cropped denim. I call these my 'Winter sneakers' literally because my ankles don't get chilly and snow/slush doesn't seep into them. These didn't have to be broken in, but I do recommend sizing a half size down.
See how I style them here and here.

I'm going to be completely honest about my Stan Smith's. I only got them because everyone at FIT had them, and I felt left out. I got them, wore them a bit, and sort of forgot about them; but every so often I remember them and pull them back out. These are great sneakers to wear with dresses and skirts because of how flattering their cut is on your ankle. For me, these did give me blisters when I first got them, but only for the first few wears. I recommend sizing a whole size down.. I had to keep exchanging mine because I was told they were true to size (not really the case).
See how I styled them here.

Thanks for everyone on Snapchat (@shelbyshowell) who thought I was creating a sneaker line with the post, it was a great compliment ;-)

June Playlist

HAPPY MONDAY. I swear all I ever have time for lately is a quick playlist post, and for that I apologize, because I know not everyone looks forward to these posts. This past week I finished up a summer class (in two weeks rather than five, so yes I was incredibly busy), so I finally have some more time to breathe and focus on The Gold Dime - aka more than just playlist posts! I have lots of ideas I want to share, most city related, since I am here for the summer.

Anyway, onto what this post is really about - music I've been obsessed with all month. This month's 'theme' is certainly a lot of less main stream artists (give or take). I recently rediscovered my love for Glass Animals and I'm not gonna lie some songs I actually Shazamed while watching Shameless (I just finished season 6!).

What're you listening to this month? Excited for any new releases?

Red Sundress

I've worn this sundress literally 1-2 times a week since I got it back at the beginning of May. It's so easy to dress up or down, comfy and flowy enough to wear in 90 degree weather, and I love the laced detailing at the neckline. I've worn it with sandals, sneakers, and a platform like the ones in this post (also seen here!). I'm also obsessed with the sleeves, they cut at the perfect length where you can still stack on the accessories and not have to worry about if they're covered up.

Summer White

I feel like everyone, including myself, is excited to whip out their summer white looks. Each piece of this outfit is a favorite of mine; the white eyelet crop top from, the Madewell perfect summer jeans, and my birthday present from Mike was this amazing pair of Supergas that I've wanted forever. These jeans needed to be 'broken' in, once they are, they're a dream. Due to how high waisted they are, I don't recommend them for long car rides/sitting in a classroom - anyone else absolutely hate the struggle of sitting in high waisted jeans? Just me?

What's your go-to summer white outfit?
