Favorite Organic Items

So for years now my mom has influenced me into natural products (paraben free, non-gmo, etc.) and basically just to eat clean/healthy. She drinks a green smoothie everyday, does yoga, and never leaves the house without sunscreen. Yeah, she's basically a vision of who I want to be. Of course, that's hard to do for a college kid but I try to stick to a healthy lifestyle as best I can. My best friend Jess is also really into natural products and one night we were talking about remedies and such and that sparked my idea for this post. I figured it's relevant because I feel most people want to be healthy (right?) and it's been trendy to drink cold pressed juice and eat kale salads these days.

My favorite way to add some ~health~ into my diet is by sprinkling some chia seeds into absolutely everything. I buy the huge box of them from BJ's and you're pretty much set for a year. Chia seeds are great sources of fiber, calcium, and antioxidants. Top off your avocado toast with them, mix them into yogurt, or a smoothie.

Coconut oil is equivalent to gold in my eyes. It has SO many benefits. My favorite way to use it is to remove my makeup but I also lather it on as a moisturizer for my body. Use refined coconut oil for cooking (it smells less coconut-y) as an alternative to oil or butter. Rub some on your eyebrows and eyelashes to make them grow extra long.

Okay so cold pressed juice isn't cheap. My favorite ones run about $6-$8 from Whole Foods, so it's definitely a treat when I take out a bank loan to get one. Cheaper alternatives include some regular ol' coconut water (my favorite is the one with pineapple) and probiotic drinks. Probiotics are SO great for you (digestive health) and the drinks are slightly carbonated (due to natural fermentation) and kind of taste like soda in that sense, so that's a great alternative too if you're addicted to diet Coke. My favorite probiotic drink is actually the Kevita Lemon Cayenne, but for photography purposes, I used my mother's favorite Kombucha drink. Highly suggest checking these out, they're all so yummy.

Smoothie bowls have become my obsession (as you probably noticed from Snapchat). I love them because they're a great alternative to dessert and also really fun to 'decorate'. Here's my recipe!:

Smoothie part:
-Frozen bananas
-Berries (raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, I buy them in a frozen bag mixed)
-Almond milk
-Touch of honey
-Lots of chia seeds (around a tablespoon)
OPTIONAL:
-Almond Butter
-Acai! (I'm cheap and won't buy acai to make a true acai bowl, hence smoothie bowl) ;)

* Make sure your smoothie part is thicker than you would make a typical smoothie. The thicker, the better, and it won't melt as fast when you're adding toppings/eating. Add more fruit or ice to make it thicker!

Toppings:
-Chia seeds
-Hemp
-Granola (I use a cereal from Trader Joe's)
-Coconut chips (You can use shredded, but the chips are just so much tastier)
-Slivered Almonds

OPTIONAL:
-Almond butter
-Cocoa nibs (as seen in Two Hand's acai bowl)
-Added fresh fruit (I love Pineapple/Mango chunks)

This isn't a surprising item for the fact that most people drink tea regularly. I wanted to include my favorite organic tea, this peppermint one! I also drink a lot of Yogi tea (I love the dandelion one and the berry medley one). I like the peppermint one because it helps an upset stomach and tastes fab.

Are you sick of me talking about Acure products? Hope not. I'll leave it by saying I love using them because I never have to worry about putting harsh chemicals/parabens on my face. They smell great, feel amazing on the skin, and you can get them at Target. My all time favorite item I have from them has to be the night cream - you wake up with a new face. Huge thanks to Jess for showing me this brand; I haven't looked back since!
Products I've tried so far:

If you want to know just what's in your beauty products, be sure to download the app Think Dirty and have fun scanning all of your items. Be forewarned, it's kind of scary to think of what we put on our face unknowingly. I wanted to throw out everything in my bathroom after I used it!

I hope you learned a thing or two and try out some of these fun things!

Striped Set

I've never been one for crop tops, but when I saw this two piece set I HAD to have it.

What's great about this set is the fact both pieces are very wearable as separates! I plan to wear the top with another black skirt I have, then the skirt with a plain white tee or a chambray shirt. Or I might wear the set together with my lace up flats! (Oh the possibilities!)

Friday Faves 3.25

This week's Friday Faves is a combination of all the things I've been lovin' the past two weeks.

I've been really looking forward to spring this week (although the weather doesn't seem to be adding to that excitement). I've been reaching for my white jeans (which I technically wear year round, shhhh) and been really enjoying styling them again.
As for this oversized jean jacket I can't help but keep talking about, I'm loving the fact it's still been a little chilly out so I can wear it. I purposely bought it super oversized (x-large from J.Crew factory!) and I'm SO glad I did. I've had jean jackets in the past, but I could never layer anything underneath. I love the fit, distress, and wash of this jacket.

Woooohoo for my first flat lay pics!
Mac Fix+ has been in my arsenal of makeup for over a year now, but I recently played around and found a new way to use it! I've been experiencing dry skin/cakey foundation and I was getting really frustrated, as I do. I dot my foundation all over my face evenly distributing it then before I start blending it in with my beauty blender, I spray Fix+ all over my face! This way it's helping the blending process as well as preventing cakey-ness. I also set my face with this after I do powder, blush, etc.
As for bronzer I was in a rut. I used the Anastasia contour kit, wasn't in love. So I went back to NYC 'Sunny' bronzer hoping I'd enjoy it again. Both for some reason slightly broke me out and were a tad orangey/didn't blend well. I happened to be on the ColourPop site and stumbled upon their bronzers, this one in particular. It's a moussey texture, like all Colourpop products, but I still apply it over my powder rather than just foundation like you do with most cream bronzers. It's surprisingly super blendable and a perfect shade for my (pale) skin. I recommend using it with a duo fiber brush. I really want to try Colourpop's eyebrow products soon!

Athens by NYX has been my absolute go-to lippie. It's always in my bag, no matter where I go. It's such a great everyday shade and one of those "your lips but better" colors. It's lightweight, easy to apply, and smells like cupcakes. I talked about it in my haul and didn't like it when I first got it, that's totally changed. I also wore it in this post.

Coconut oil is an all-year, all around favorite but I wanted to mention it solely based on the fact I got a new container of it (Wegman's brand like a true upstate NY gal). My main use for coconut oil is to remove my makeup; I start to massage it into my face when it is dry and it uplifts all my makeup, then I continue with my cleanser. I notice that sometimes it's 'residue' stays on my lashes/eyebrows and I've noticed they grow so much more! Long lashes and full brows, yes please. I also use coconut oil for my eczema that flares up here and there, I trust putting a natural product on it more than anything else. I love putting it on my legs after I shave as well!

I received the shampoo & conditioner in addition to this serum oil. Only brought home the serum for spring break which is why it's the only one pictured!
I was sent this line on behalf of Influenster and L'Oreal and I am loving it. I use the shampoo and conditioner everyday as opposed to washing every other day like I did with other products. This entire line really makes your hair look healthy, especially after using heat tools. I had dull, straw like hair for a while, but I've used this for about a month and it's almost reversed the damage. I really love this line! Thanks Influenster & L'Oreal for sending me these!

Last week I got to meet one of my longtime favorite bloggers, Julia Engel of Gal Meets Glam! It was so wonderful getting to meet her and chat about blogging. I've never felt more inspired! I took so much of what she said into consideration and decided to make some 'huge' changes to The Gold Dime; more of behind the scenes type things, so maybe you'll start to notice some quality changes. Julia was so incredibly sweet and polite (more beautiful in person!), and her husband Thomas was too!

At the event I happened to run into (what're the odds in NYC?) some blogging gals! I saw Nicole from Empire Styles and Lexie from Lexie's Life! It was so nice seeing people I've interacted with so long from simply blogging and social media. I can't wait to meet up with them again as well as Jamie
It was also really special that I saw them and got to meet Julia mainly because when I transferred I wanted to be closer to 'connections' and 'networking' and this was just a small step into doing that.
Be sure to read Nicole's post as well as Lexie's recapping the Gap event!

I know what you're thinking. No this isn't a museum, it's my antique filled home.

As you might know, I'm home for spring break this week! So of course I had to mention 'home' as a favorite. I haven't seen my parents since January so it was a great little homecoming. I luckily don't have much school work to do this week so I've been loving simply just relaxing and hanging out at home, plus plenty of trips to Target.

Until next time!

How cute is this vintage Coach bag from the late '70s?!

Springtime Look

I was super excited for this particular fashion post because I just love how the pictures turned out!
Anyway, I love pairing neutrals with a pop of color; it will always amp your look. Do so with a bag like this look, some colorful sunglasses, or statement shoes.

Weekend Wear

GUYS it's finally spring break for me! NO MORE MIDTERMS!
Alright let's get on with it. I've been LIVING in this Old Navy t-shirt, to the point where Michael thinks I have no other shirts. I love cuffing some 'baggier' jeans and pairing them with a fun shoe. Here I'm wearing my Old Navy lace-up flats that I've also essentially been living in.

Bag is from MarleyLilly.com!
What're your plans for spring break? I plan on relaxing at home, hanging with my mother, and I can't wait.

March Playlist

I have to be honest, my Spotify premium trial is over and I'm kind of depressed. Regardless I still made a playlist to share with you all. Bear with me, I had to include some of my favorites from The 1975's new album - I hope you love them as much as I do! I'm also really digging The Japanese House too. Take a listen.

Have a new favorite? Let me know in the comments below!

Greenport

This past weekend marked the end of Michael's Spring Break and the end to the most stressful week of quite possibly, my whole college career. With that, I spent the weekend at Michael's and experienced all of my favorite things about Long Island. Those things include LI bagel sandwiches, tons of iced coffee trips, dinner dates, basically anything including Michael and some food. We also scored some great deals at the Tanger outlets (J.Crew specifically/obviously). Anyway, Saturday Michael wanted to go on an adventure. That adventure included an hour and a half trip to the east end of the island. We ended up in the cutest little port town, Greenport!

It was finally warm enough to only have to wear my J.Crew field jacket

One of my favorite things to do when on the island is just sit on the dock and chat.

We went to a little cafe for coffee and a massive cinnamon bun (YUM), then walked around the quiet little town, venturing in and out of the little shops.

If you saw on Snapchat (@shelbyshowell) you saw that Michael quite literally got on the ground to take pictures for me, hence the huge smile.

What a view :)
It was nice to get away for a bit and see an entirely new part of the island I've never experienced before. So lucky to have Michael and be able to explore new places with him.
